About This Record

What Was Written Down

A Lukhele narrator in 1970 said his people came down the Lubombo with the Dlamini kings, tried to cross the Phongolo, were blocked by the Zulu and returned to Shiselweni; the king later placed them in their present area as sentinels against Zulu raids. Their remembered ancestors are Tigodvo, Mongo, Nhlangotsi and Dambuza Lukhele, the last a chief and warrior who died at Lubuya in 1839. Kuper, as reported, marks the Lukhele as related to and not intermarrying with the Mdluli and Nkonyane. A Lukhele woman, sister of Dambuza, married Sobhuza I. The tinanatelo blog groups Mdluli, Lukhele and Sikhandzisa together. Recorded from the sources named on this entry; the wording here is Sibaya's own.
