About This Record
What Was Written Down
Junod records that Maputju was the younger brother of Muhari of Tembe and made himself independent late in the eighteenth century, so his dynasty's list is short: Maputju, Muwayi, Makasana (1800-1850), Tlhuma, Musongi or Nozililo (1850), Ngwanazi (who fled to British Amatongaland after the Gungunyana war of 1895). The 1904 Mozambique Year Book counted 22,848 people in the Maputju circumscription. Wikipedia's Tembe article gives the same line as the Mabudu-Tembe branch: Mabudu (1764-1782), Mwayi, Makasana (1800-1854), Noziyingile (1854-1886), the regent Zambili Dlamini, then Ngwanase (1894-1928), whose descendants hold the Tembe Tribal Authority at Manguzi. Recorded from the sources named on this entry; the wording here is Sibaya's own.
