About This Record

What Was Written Down

Junod places the Manyisa and Shirindja clans north of the Mazwaya as the transition between Ronga and Dzonga speech, notes that Perestrello in 1554 named a river and chief Manhisa, and identifies that river with the Nkomati where it crosses the Manyisa country. Manyisa people had settled in Rikatla under their own headman by the 1890s. The 1904 Year Book counted 24,183 people in the Manyisa circumscription. Recorded from the sources named on this entry; the wording here is Sibaya's own.
