About This Record

What Was Written Down

Magoma records the Tshidzivhe clan as custodians of Thathe forest, where the Netshidzivhe family buries and reburies its chiefs in a cave and where married women bearing the surnames Nethathe, Netshidzivhe or Netshitangani are still buried. The forest's name is derived from a verb meaning to chase away, after a chief Nethathe remembered as a healer who is believed to guard the forest as a white lion. The clan forbids filming of its rituals. Commercial pine plantations since 1945 and recent mineral prospecting are recorded as threats. Recorded from the sources named on this entry; the wording here is Sibaya's own.
