The History Behind This Name
As written down by the people named at the end.
The Chunu (Mchunu) people settled between the small and large Lala mountains in what is now central KwaZulu-Natal. The clan is traced through Mavovo, whose descendants Nyanda (Lubhoko/Dubandlela) and Jama led to Macingwane kaJama, the chief who brought the Chunu chieftaincy to prominence during the era of Dingiswayo's Mthethwa Paramountcy, ruling from his homestead at Ngonyameni near Thaleni.
The Chunu clashed repeatedly with the rising Zulu kingdom under Shaka and later Dingane and Mpande; King Macingwane himself is remembered in tradition as having died at Sandlwane while resisting incursions. His descendants, including Phakade, rebuilt Chunu authority in their historical homeland, and the clan remains a significant presence in the Msinga and Nkandla districts of KwaZulu-Natal.

A family saying its own izithakazelo knows them better than any directory does. If yours has more than what is on this page, it belongs here.
