Recorded Praise Names

These are praise names, not a full recitation.

Two versions are recorded and neither has been chosen. Where community sources differ on a praise, both readings are kept. A regional form and a transcription slip are indistinguishable to anyone who is not a first-language reader.

The History Behind This Name

As written down by the people named at the end.

The amaMpondo trace their descent from King Sibiside of the abaMbo, and share that ancestry with the amaMpondomise, amaXesibe and amaBomvana. The Nyawuza royal clan takes its name from Nyawuza kaThahle.

The kingdom is best known through Faku, who reigned from 1818 to 1867 and held Mpondoland through the upheavals of the Mfecane, turning back Zulu and Bhaca incursions. The nation is administered through two houses: eastern Mpondoland from the Qawukeni great place at Flagstaff, and western Mpondoland from Nyandeni at Libode.
